Climbing Wall FAQs: Answers to our Most Frequently Asked Questions
Are you interested in an Everlast Climbing™ wall? This post outlines some of our most frequently asked questions and answers to get you started on your climbing wall journey! We are here to help, so please call (800-476-7366) or email us and we can walk you through all of our options.
- What is a Traverse Wall®? A Traverse Wall® is designed to be climbed horizontally rather than vertically. This is a perfect wall for kids as it limits how high they can climb. Most walls include our signature Red-Relief Line™ which reminds climbers to keep their feet about 36 inches from the safety mats. Also this type of climbing wall does not require ropes or harnesses. A Traverse Wall® is typically 8’ or 10’ high and comes in 4’ sections to allow you to choose a desired length.
- How tall is an indoor climbing wall? The heights of walls vary based on which wall you decide to purchase. Traverse Walls® are either 8’ or 10’ high, while Top Rope Climbing Walls are typically as tall as specified by you in order to fit your facility. The most common height is 20 feet high.
- What are indoor rock-climbing walls made of? All of our walls, except for the Superior Rock™ Climbing Wall, start with a 4’ x 8’ plywood base and we offer a variety of surface options, including smooth, rock-realistic, and multiple cross-curricular options. Some of our cross-circular surfaces include Magna®, Discovery® Dry-Erase, and Discovery® Chalkboard climbing walls.
- What safety features are included with your climbing walls? Just like any activity, rock climbing can pose a risk. Here at Everlast Climbing we greatly value safety and have incorporated many features and protocols to help you create the safest possible climbing program. One of these features is the Red-Relief® Line that reminds climbers to keep their feet no higher than 3 feet from the safety mats. Those safety mats extend 6’ from the base of the wall to provide a cushioned landing for climbers and include a Mat Locking® System that easily closes and locks the wall to deter unauthorized climbing when the climbing wall is closed. The included Safety, Care and Maintenance Manual outlines safety protocols as well.
- What is the warranty on your climbing walls? All warranties on products purchased from Everlast Climbing™ are limited to one year from the date of purchase. If the wall is installed by our team, the warranty is extended by an additional year.
- How many climbing holds do I need? Our climbing walls include a high density of holds so that climbers have options and find success. Typically, there are 20 hand holds on each 4’ x 8’ panel on our Traverse Walls®. However, there are 66 t-nuts per panel so more holds can be added if you are looking to add more variety or challenge. Contact us to find out more.
- What is the average cost of building an indoor climbing wall? The average cost of building an indoor climbing wall depends on a variety of factors, including where it will go, the size, and what surface option you choose. Contact us and we will happily create a quote for you.
- What is the weight limit for your walls? The weight limit for each 4’ x 8’ panel is 350 pounds.
- How many climbers at one time can climb on a wall? In general, one climber is recommended per 4’ x 8’ panel, so if you are interested in a 20’-long wall, you can comfortably accommodate 5 climbers. Keep in mind that there can be a steady stream of climbers on and off the climbing wall, so larger groups can be accommodated. Some activities also incorporate partners (one climber, the other with a different role) so that also allows for more active participation than just one person per panel.
- What is the recommended age group for your walls? We have climbing walls for all ages 3 and up! Our Weekidz® Traverse Wall® is for children ages 3-5, with a shorter climbing surface and larger hand holds. Traverse Walls® are typically best for ages 5-12, but can accommodate a higher age range if you want to add an overhang feature or more challenging hand holds. Our Top Rope Walls are best suited for ages 12 – adult because they involve a partner (belayer) managing a safety rope for climbers. Our Combi Wall accommodates the widest range of ages because it is a combination of a Traverse Wall® and Top Rope Wall. This wall is good for ages 5 – adult.
- How do I go about funding for building an indoor climbing wall? There are many ways to raise funds for an indoor climbing wall, including fundraising, crowdfunding, and National and State Grants. Contact us for a Funding Guide that corresponds with your state.
