FAQs
Where should hand holds be installed?
For climbing walls with T-nuts, you can install hand holds anywhere there is a T-nut. We put 66 T-nuts on each 4' x 8' climbing panel to give you many placement options for the 20 holds included with each panel. Many people choose to create climbing routes by placing holds of a single color in such a way that climbers can make it across or up the climbing wall using holds of only that one color.
Some specialty hand holds use different mounting hardware, so always follow the instructions included with your holds. To learn more about route-setting, please read this blog post.
How do I choose the right hand holds for my climbing wall?
Our climbing walls include hand holds. We provide a variety of sizes and shapes to help climbers of varying abilities and experience levels find success. If you have a custom project, our team will discuss the hand hold options and help you choose the right ones for your climbers.
How many hand holds do I need for my climbing wall?
We include 20 hand holds per 4' x 8' climbing panel. We feel this quantity provides many options for climbers to find holds that will work best for them. If you have a custom project, our team will discuss the appropriate quantity for your project.
Which hand holds are best for different ages and skill levels?
Typically, larger and easy-to-grasp holds are best for beginner climbers. Smaller, more technical holds are great for more experienced climbers. Our climbing walls include color-coded route-setting hand holds with beginner, intermediate and advanced options. If you have a custom project, our team can assist you in choosing the appropriate holds.
Can hand holds be moved or rearranged after installation?
Yes. Bolt-on hand holds are installed with a bolt that can be loosened or removed with the included Allen wrench to easily re-orient, remove, or relocate hand holds. Other hold types may use different hardware, so follow the hand hold installation instructions included with your purchase. Read these tips for installing hand holds.
How do I inspect and clean climbing hand holds?
Inspect: Periodically inspect your climbing hand holds and remove and replace any that have cracks, chips or signs of wear.
Tighten: Over time, some hand holds may loosen and spin. This is normal. Grab your Allen wrench and tighten the hold until it is secure against the climbing wall. Be sure not to overtighten. See the installation instructions.
Clean: When the holds are visibly dirty or slick with chalk, it is time to clean them. The easiest way is to remove them and put them in a dishwasher with or without detergent using the normal cycle. Choose air dry for the drying cycle so they are not heated while drying.
If you do not have a dishwasher, hand wash holds in warm water with a mild detergent and scrub them with a soft bristle brush. Never use a wire brush.
Dry and replace if needed: Rinse the holds and allow them to completely air dry for at least 24 hours before reinstalling on the climbing wall. This is also a good time to inspect your holds. Look for any cracks, chips or holds that have gotten overly smooth. Those holds should be replaced and not re-installed on the climbing wall.
